Usability Testing
Overview
Software usability testing is a testing service that verifies and evaluates a software product’s understandability, learnability, operability, user error protection, interface comfort and accessibility, against the requirement specification, product description, user documentation, interface design requirements and applicable standards. The focus includes whether interface information is clear, whether operation flows are smooth, whether messages are easy to understand, whether help information is effective, and whether users can complete business tasks efficiently.
Usability testing helps clients identify issues in interface layout, menu structure, operation paths, input validation, error messages, help documentation, interaction consistency and user experience, reducing the learning cost for users and improving efficiency and satisfaction.
The Value of Usability Testing
Usability testing is an important part of software quality evaluation. It helps clients assess, from the end user’s perspective, whether the software is easy to understand, easy to learn and easy to operate, and whether it supports users in completing actual business tasks stably and efficiently.
For government bodies, enterprises and institutions, research institutes and software project owners, usability testing can be used for software acceptance, project delivery, quality confirmation before launch, user experience optimisation and business efficiency improvement, providing technical support for project management and quality supervision.
Testing Basis and Evaluation Dimensions
According to GB/T 25000.51-2016, Systems and software engineering — Systems and software Quality Requirements and Evaluation (SQuaRE) — Part 51: Requirements and testing details for ready-to-use software products (RUSP), the usability of software quality is mainly evaluated from the following aspects:
Appropriateness Recognisability
Verify whether users can recognise software functions and applicable scenarios through the interface, menus, product description or user documentation, and whether they can understand input data formats, the meaning of output data, report content and system messages.
Learnability
Verify whether users can learn and master software functions with the help of interface guidance, help features, user manuals or online documentation. The focus includes whether help information is complete, whether help content relates to the current operation, whether explanations are accurate and clear, and whether users can use the functions correctly after reading the documentation.
Operability
Verify whether the software makes it easy for users to complete and control operations. The focus includes input validity checks, availability of default values, convenience of parameter selection, prompts for critical operations, undo or rollback capability, shortcut key support, identification of interface controls, and the consistency and effectiveness of windows, menus, icons and mouse operations.
User Error Protection
Verify whether the software can prevent user errors and provide clear, understandable prompts and recovery options when errors occur. For operations with potentially significant impact such as delete, overwrite, submit and import, check whether explicit prompts, confirmation mechanisms or recoverable measures are in place.
User Interface Aesthetics
Verify whether the software interface provides a clear, coherent and satisfying interaction experience. The focus includes whether page styles are consistent, whether colour use is reasonable, whether control layouts are harmonious, and whether buttons, menus, labels, prompts and operation methods remain consistent.
Accessibility
Verify whether the software can be used effectively by different types of users in the specified usage environment. Testing can focus on the readability of interface information, clarity of operation entry points, availability of help methods, and the convenience of completing specified tasks in multilingual or special usage scenarios.
Our Capabilities
With a professional software evaluation team and standardised testing processes, Star River Quality provides third-party software usability testing for government bodies, enterprises and institutions, research institutes and software development companies.
We prepare a test plan to the project’s needs, design usability test scenarios, carry out interface checks, menu checks, window checks, input/output checks, help documentation checks, error message checks and task path verification, and record, analyse and report the issues found.
After testing, Star River Quality can issue a CNAS software test report as required for software acceptance, project delivery, system launch, user experience optimisation and related quality evaluation scenarios, providing clients with objective, standardised and credible evidence of software usability evaluation.
