Performance Testing

Overview

Software performance efficiency testing is a testing service that verifies and evaluates a software product’s responsiveness, processing capability, resource consumption and capacity under specified operating conditions, against the requirement specification, product description, design documents and applicable standards. The focus includes whether response times meet requirements, whether throughput reaches expectations, whether the system remains stable under concurrent access, whether server resource usage is reasonable, and whether system capacity matches the statements in the requirement specification.

Performance efficiency testing helps clients identify slow response, insufficient concurrency handling, excessive resource consumption, capacity bottlenecks and low interface processing efficiency, providing an objective basis for software launch, project acceptance, system expansion, performance optimisation and quality evaluation.

The Value of Performance Efficiency Testing

Performance efficiency testing is an important part of software quality evaluation. It helps clients understand how the software performs under typical business scenarios, high-frequency operations, large data volumes and concurrent access before the system enters formal operation.

For government bodies, enterprises and institutions, research institutes and software project owners, performance efficiency testing can be used for software acceptance, project delivery, quality confirmation before launch, performance optimisation verification, capacity expansion assessment and operational risk control, providing technical support for project management and quality supervision.

Testing Basis and Evaluation Dimensions

According to GB/T 25000.51-2016, Systems and software engineering — Systems and software Quality Requirements and Evaluation (SQuaRE) — Part 51: Requirements and testing details for ready-to-use software products (RUSP), the performance efficiency of software quality is mainly evaluated from the following aspects:

Time Behaviour

Verify whether response time, processing time, throughput and turnaround time meet the requirements when the software executes functions under specified conditions. Testing usually selects scenarios with large data volumes, frequent user operations or significant business impact, and uses performance testing tools to verify behaviour under single-user, concurrent-user and maximum-load conditions.

Resource Utilisation

Verify whether the software’s use of CPU, memory, I/O and network bandwidth is reasonable when executing concurrent or typical business tasks. Higher resource utilisation is not necessarily better; system configuration and business pressure should be considered when judging whether a resource bottleneck or resource waste exists.

Capacity

Verify the maximum task volume, concurrency, data volume or processing scale the software can support under different system configurations, data scales and business scenarios, and confirm whether system capacity meets the requirements stated in the requirement specification or product description.

Testing Methods

Depending on the characteristics of the software under test, Star River Quality can apply black-box techniques such as performance testing, load testing, capacity testing and stress testing, using general-purpose or dedicated performance testing tools, resource monitoring tools and test case design methods to evaluate the performance efficiency of the product.

During testing, transaction iteration counts, test duration and rendezvous points can be set according to project objectives. For example, key business transactions can be executed for multiple rounds to verify average response time; continuous runtime can be set for concurrent access scenarios to observe system stability; and rendezvous points can be set for key operations that need to simulate concurrency peaks, to verify system behaviour under peak pressure.

Our Capabilities

With a professional software evaluation team and standardised testing processes, Star River Quality provides third-party software performance efficiency testing for government bodies, enterprises and institutions, research institutes and software development companies.

We prepare a test plan to the project’s needs, design performance test scenarios, carry out response time testing, concurrency testing, throughput testing, resource utilisation monitoring, capacity verification and result analysis, and record, analyse and report the issues found.

After testing, Star River Quality can issue a CNAS software test report as required for software acceptance, project delivery, system launch, performance optimisation, quality evaluation and related management scenarios, providing clients with objective, standardised and credible evidence of software performance efficiency evaluation.
