Maintainability Testing
Overview
Software maintainability testing is a testing service that verifies and evaluates a software product’s problem diagnosis, configuration changes, module impact, version identification, logging, parameter adjustment and ongoing maintenance support, against the requirement specification, design documents, user documentation, maintenance instructions and applicable standards. The focus includes whether the software makes it easy to analyse problems, easy to modify configuration, able to identify versions and components, and whether system changes have a clear impact on other modules.
Maintainability testing helps clients identify issues in module division, configuration management, logging, documentation completeness, exception messages, problem localisation, version management and maintenance handover, reducing the cost of subsequent operation, upgrades and secondary development.
The Value of Maintainability Testing
Maintainability testing is an important part of software quality evaluation. It helps clients judge whether the software has the foundation for long-term maintenance and continuous improvement. For systems that must run for a long time, iterate continuously, or be handed over between teams, maintainability directly affects the efficiency of later problem handling and the cost of system upgrades.
For government bodies, enterprises and institutions, research institutes and software project owners, maintainability testing can be used for software acceptance, project delivery, quality confirmation before launch, operations handover, system upgrade assessment and preparation for secondary development, providing technical support for project management and quality supervision.
Testing Basis and Evaluation Dimensions
According to GB/T 25000.51-2016, Systems and software engineering — Systems and software Quality Requirements and Evaluation (SQuaRE) — Part 51: Requirements and testing details for ready-to-use software products (RUSP), and with reference to the system and software quality model in GB/T 25000.10-2016, the maintainability of software quality is mainly evaluated from the following aspects:
Modularity
Verify whether the software consists of relatively independent modules or components, and whether a change to one component minimises the impact on others. Testing can focus on whether components such as roles and permissions, business processes, base parameters, interfaces and database models have clear boundaries and identifiable information.
Reusability
Verify whether functions, components, interfaces or configuration capabilities in the software have reuse value and can support multiple business scenarios, multiple systems or later functional expansion. Testing can focus on whether common modules, public interfaces, configuration items and business components are easy to reuse.
Analysability
Verify whether the software provides clear prompts and diagnostic evidence when exceptions, failures or business problems occur. The focus includes whether operation logs, error logs, login logs, debug logs, status monitoring, exception messages, user documentation and troubleshooting instructions help maintenance staff locate problems.
Modifiability
Verify whether the software can be effectively modified without significantly affecting the quality of existing functions. Testing can focus on whether base parameter settings, permission configuration, business process configuration, system maintenance functions, configuration file changes and page customisation capabilities meet actual maintenance needs.
Testability
Verify whether the software makes it easy to establish test criteria and to judge through test execution whether a modification or configuration meets expectations. Testing can focus on whether the system provides the necessary test entry points, pre-checks, simulation capability, log support and regression verification conditions, so that maintenance staff can carry out operational checks and issue retesting.
Our Capabilities
With a professional software evaluation team and standardised testing processes, Star River Quality provides third-party software maintainability testing for government bodies, enterprises and institutions, research institutes and software development companies.
We prepare a test plan to the project’s needs, carry out modularity checks, configuration change verification, log and exception message checks, documentation consistency checks, interface and process verification, testability verification and maintenance handover documentation checks, and record, analyse and report the issues found.
After testing, Star River Quality can issue a CNAS software test report as required for software acceptance, project delivery, system launch, operations handover, upgrade assessment and related quality evaluation scenarios, providing clients with objective, standardised and credible evidence of software maintainability evaluation.
