Portability Testing

Overview

Software portability testing is a testing service that verifies and evaluates a software product’s ability to be installed, run, migrated and replaced across different hardware, software, system platforms and operating environments, against the requirement specification, product description, installation documentation, user documentation, operating environment requirements and applicable standards. The focus includes whether the software can be correctly installed, run normally and cleanly uninstalled on the platforms and systems it declares to support, and whether function and data continuity are maintained when the environment changes or versions are replaced.

Portability testing helps clients identify issues in installation and deployment, environment adaptation, configuration support, version upgrades, data migration, component uninstallation and platform switching, reducing risk during software delivery, deployment and migration.

The Value of Portability Testing

Portability testing is an important part of software quality evaluation. It helps clients confirm whether the software can adapt to different or changing operating environments, whether it can be deployed according to the installation documentation, and whether it can run stably on the platforms listed in the product description.

For government bodies, enterprises and institutions, research institutes and software project owners, portability testing can be used for software acceptance, project delivery, quality confirmation before launch, domestic (localised) environment adaptation, cloud platform migration, version upgrade verification and multi-environment deployment assessment, providing technical support for project management and quality supervision.

Testing Basis and Evaluation Dimensions

According to GB/T 25000.51-2016, Systems and software engineering — Systems and software Quality Requirements and Evaluation (SQuaRE) — Part 51: Requirements and testing details for ready-to-use software products (RUSP), the portability of software quality is mainly evaluated from the following aspects:

Adaptability

Verify whether the software can effectively adapt to different or changing hardware, software and other operating environments. Testing can focus on how the software runs under different operating systems, databases, middleware, browsers, network environments, hardware configurations, language settings and data scales, confirming whether it works normally in the environments declared as supported.

Installability

Verify whether the software can be successfully installed, configured, run and uninstalled in the specified environment according to the installation documentation. Testing can focus on whether the installation documentation is complete, whether installation files are complete, whether default and custom installations work, whether different installation options can be executed successfully, whether uninstallation is complete, and whether the system runs normally after reinstallation.

Replaceability

Verify whether the software can replace similar or older software in the same or a similar environment. Testing can focus on version upgrades, patch installation, online upgrades, data format compatibility, continued use of historical data, functional continuity and user interface consistency, confirming that business continuity is maintained after replacement or upgrade.

Our Capabilities

With a professional software evaluation team and standardised testing processes, Star River Quality provides third-party software portability testing for government bodies, enterprises and institutions, research institutes and software development companies.

We prepare a test plan to the project’s needs, design portability test scenarios, carry out adaptability, installability and replaceability testing, environment adaptation verification, version upgrade verification and data continuity checks, and record, analyse and report the issues found.

After testing, Star River Quality can issue a CNAS software test report as required for software acceptance, project delivery, system launch, environment migration, version upgrades and related quality evaluation scenarios, providing clients with objective, standardised and credible evidence of software portability evaluation.
